Earlier this month, RIM's misery was worsened by a series of failures in its private network that disrupted BlackBerry service to millions of customers across four continents.Though the company quickly went on the defensive offering free apps and technical support, the damage has been done. Even as RIM declined to comment on the extent of monetary loss caused by the recent outage, analysts anticipated the compensation plan could reach into the hundreds of millions of dollars. And RIM's legal troubles over the recent lawsuits have just started – the company is facing two class action lawsuits from users of the devices in both the United States and Canada. The lawsuits accuse Research in Motion of breach of contract, negligence and unjust enrichment. Microsoft collects license fees on 50% of Android devices, tells Google to "wake up"

Google's complaints about patent-based attacks against Android don't seem to be doing the company any good. We all know Steve Jobs pledged to destroy Android, claiming it stole its ideas from Apple's iOS. Yet what is likely an even bigger threat comes from Microsoft, which claims that more than half of all Android devices are now subject to patent licensing agreements. What does that mean? When you buy an Android phone, there's a good chance either the vendor whose name is on the device or one of the manufacturers who contributed hardware to it is paying Microsoft a fee for each sale. Today, Microsoft announced an agreement with Compal, an original design manufacturer that produces smartphones and tablets for third parties and takes in $28 billion in annual revenue. This was the "tenth license agreement providing coverage under our patent portfolio for Android mobile phones and tablets," and the ninth in the last four months, Microsoft lawyers Brad Smith and Horacio Gutierrez write in a blog post. "More important, today's announcement means that companies accounting for over half of all Android devices have now entered into patent license agreements with Microsoft," they claim. .....

DoT hangs up on 11-digit plan, to free up 650 mn mobile nos

The proposal to move to 11-digit mobile numbers has been shelved for good. The telecom department has accepted the short-term solution from Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to create additional capacity in the '7' and '8' series and this will free up 650 million mobile numbers to cater to the industry's demands for the next 30 months, officials aware of the development told ET. As a long-term solution, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has also decided to open up levels '5', '6' and '3' for mobile services. This implies mobile phone numbers of the future will begin with these digits. This will free up an additional 2,750.9 million (2.75 billion) mobile numbers, according to an internal DoT document reviewed by ET. This is also expected to address the country's mobile numbering plans for cellular services for about a decade....

Apple Q4 net up 54%, shares fall as results miss Street view

Apple Inc.'s fiscal fourth-quarter earnings surged 54% but missed expectations as sales of the company's signature smartphone fell short of many projections. Sales of the iPhone, which accounts for nearly half of the Cupertino, Calif-based company's revenue, rose by more than a fifth to 17.1 million units in the quarter, which ended Sept. 24. The sales fell short of some analyst expectations that pegged expected sales closer to 22 million units. Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said in an interview with Dow Jones Newswires that expectations of a new iPhone model weighed on the performance of the existing iPhone 4. A new iPhone, the 4S, was released on Oct. 14 and quickly broke Apple's previous launch records. "We enter this holiday quarter with tremendous momentum," Oppenheimer said.....

iPhone 4S vs iPhone 4

iPhone 4S didn't come out on top here, but is it so much better that you need to upgrade? Well, if games aren't your thing and if the idea of Siri doesn't drive you wild with excitement, then the answer is probably no. Sure, it's got a better camera and takes video at a higher resolution and it even has a marginally longer battery life too, but none of this is any reason to try to buy your way out of a contract. It's also arguable as to whether 4G connectivity or AirPlay Mirroring - which only works with Apple TV anyway - is really going to add enough value for many people as well.....
